There are journeys measured by distance, and there are journeys measured by depth. The first teaches us how to move through the world. The second reveals why movement alone can never satisfy the heart. Hidden beneath every desire lies a deeper desire, and beneath every longing rests the memory of a communion for which the soul was created. There are moments when this longing unexpectedly awakens. A passage of Scripture lingers long after it is read. A prayer leaves an echo that words cannot explain. A moment of beauty opens a wound we did not know existed. In such moments, the soul senses that reality is deeper than it appears. Something within us is stirred by something beyond us, as though an unseen conversation has already begun. The Psalmist gives voice to this mystery: “Deep calls unto deep” (Psalm 42:7).
