Following The Tears #TheLonging21thDays
My longing to hear Him has carried me through silence, awakening, and deep inner stirring. Over time I learned that the key is not merely His omnipresence or His manifested presence, but His indwelling presence, the God who has chosen the human heart as His dwelling place (John 14:17). The heart is a well. When it fills, it overflows, and often the overflow is tears.
The early Fathers understood this overflowing not as sentiment but as κατάνυξις (katanyxis), the piercing of the heart. St. Ephrem prayed for fountains of tears. St. Isaac the Syrian called them a second baptism. St. John Climacus saw them as purification. Cassian taught that mature prayer flows into tears. For the Desert Fathers, katanyxis was not emotional release but grace, a divine wound that heals.
This is the wavelength of Scripture’s own witnesses. Jeremiah’s tears were not his own; they revealed God’s sorrow for a people who traded living water for broken cisterns. Jesus wept at Lazarus’s tomb with a quiet grief that bore the weight of humanity’s bondage to death. David’s tears rose as prayer when language failed him. Paul served and warned with tears, because apostolic strength is never separated from tenderness (Jer. 2:13; Jn. 11:35; Ps. 56:8; Acts 20:19, 31).
Across Scripture and the Fathers, the pattern remains clear. Tears are not weakness. Tears are alignment. They reveal that grace has pierced the heart, that katanyxis is at work, that the indwelling Spirit is moving within (Rom. 8:26). To follow the tears is to follow Him.
These tears open the inner channels where the Spirit flows. They create movement within the soul, small currents at first and then rising streams of living water from hidden depths. When we trace where the tears come from and where they lead, we begin to discern where the Holy Spirit is moving and how He is speaking. The deep secret of His guidance is not distant. It waits in the chambers of our own heart, where the Indwelling One stirs the waters.
And when we gather as a community, the pattern widens. The same Spirit who moves through one heart moves through another. Tears become a living script being written among His people. They reveal a story, a message, and a divine thread weaving itself through us.
This is why the tears matter. They open the flow. They reveal the Presence. They trace the movement of the Spirit among individuals and communities. They show us where He is going, and when we follow them, we follow Him.
Just Me,
Hanny
